| molodetz2 | Compilation, data processing, databases, machine learning (light), production services, the compute leader | GT 710 GPU is too weak for serious ML; Realtek NIC (slightly worse driver support) |
10. Conclusion
Performance tier
molodetz2 - clear winner in every category. The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (6C/12T, Zen 2) with 32 MiB L3 cache, PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage, 62 GiB RAM, and a superior security architecture (AMD not affected by Meltdown, MDS, SRBDS, etc.) makes this the most capable machine in the fleet by a wide margin. It has 69% more multi-threaded CPU throughput than molodetz.nl and 150% faster storage access.
molodetz.nl - a respectable desktop server with 4C/8T i7-6700, 62 GiB RAM, and two NVMe SSDs in RAID1. Strong Docker host with extensive bridge networking. Critical issue: root partition at 100% capacity (412 GiB / 443.8 GiB). The system is functionally degraded for any write-intensive operation. The Skylake CPU also has numerous unmitigated or partially mitigated vulnerabilities. This machine needs urgent disk cleanup before it can be considered production-stable.
retoor2 (local) - an aging Lenovo ThinkPad X270 (2016). The i5-6300U is a 15W ultra-low-power dual-core that is roughly 1/4 the multi-threaded throughput of molodetz.nl and 1/5 that of molodetz2. RAM is capped at 8 GiB, storage is SATA SSD. However, it has a working WiFi card, an integrated screen/battery, and serves as a usable portable development workstation. Security posture is poor-multiple vulnerabilities remain unfixed.
Recommendations
- molodetz.nl urgently needs root filesystem cleanup or expansion - 412 GiB consumed with only 2.4 GiB free is a critical risk.
- retoor2 should receive microcode and kernel security updates (Meltdown/MDS/SRBDS are marked vulnerable).
- molodetz2 is the preferred host for compute-heavy workloads, compilation, and production services.
- Consider repurposing retoor2 as an SSH jump host / thin client if more portable compute is not required.
- For any CUDA-dependent workload, molodetz2's GT 710 is the only option - but its compute capability (3.5) limits it to very light tasks. A GPU upgrade would substantially increase capacity.
