Uber and Wayve Launch London’s First Public Robotaxi Service

Overview

London’s first public robotaxi service is now live. Starting today, UK riders can hail a self-driving vehicle via the Uber app through a partnership with autonomous driving company Wayve. A safety operator will initially remain in the driver’s seat during the initial phase.

Technology & Approach

Wayve distinguishes itself from competitors such as Waymo, Zoox, Nuro, Avride, and May Mobility by using foundational AI models that enable its AI Driver to learn from real-world environments and adapt to new roads, vehicles, weather conditions, and cities with unprecedented speed and efficiency.

Unlike AV systems that rely on high-definition maps and hand-coded rules, Wayve’s approach allows its AI Driver to learn from real-world experiences and apply those skills to unexpected scenarios without prior training exposure.

Competitive Landscape

Competitors include Waymo, Zoox, Nuro, Avride, and May Mobility - all partnered with Lyft, Uber, or both. Waymo aims to launch its robotaxi service in London sometime this year pending regulatory approval. Meanwhile, Uber laid off around 10% of its staff, simplifying team structures by eliminating several management roles.

Operational Structure

At launch, Wayve will manage its fleet, while Otto Car (private car rental services) will oversee trained onboard safety drivers. Uber will eventually take over day-to-day fleet operations alongside Otto Car. Both companies will operate a London depot serving as a hub for vehicle maintenance, servicing, and charging. Charging pitstops will be placed throughout the operating area to maximize vehicle uptime.

How to Book a Ride

Starting today, riders requesting an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric ride in London can be matched with a Wayve-powered Mach-E vehicle. There is no additional cost and pricing is displayed upfront. The vehicles drive autonomously, though a safety operator will initially oversee the trip and offer support or take the wheel if needed.

To book, go to Account > Settings > Autonomous Vehicles (under Ride Preferences) and toggle the option “Get more autonomous rides.” When the car arrives, riders can unlock it and begin the trip directly from the Uber app. A touchscreen inside the vehicle displays the planned route, similar to other self-driving vehicles from companies like Waymo. Riders can access human support through the Uber app or from the safety operator within the vehicle.

After completing a trip, riders can rate the experience-though tipping is not prompted.
