Switch emulation now goes both ways: PC games on Switch and Switch games on PC

Suyu, one of Yuzu's offspring conceived to keep Switch emulation alive and well on PC, recently achieved a major technical milestone. Unfortunately, the developers have also decided to stop working on the project for the foreseeable future. But new forks have already begun refreshing Suyu's code, allowing Nintendo's cat-and-mouse game with Switch emulation to continue indefinitely.

Suyu 0.04: Recompiler Mode

The "final" public release of Suyu (0.04) introduced a new "recompiler mode" that can statically translate Arm64 (AArch64) native code designed to run on the Switch so it can run natively on a PC. Game code is recompiled into native x86-64 executable binaries, which should provide significant performance benefits in heavier games.

Suyu 0.04 can either use its traditional emulation mode, replicating the many components - GPU, CPU, audio, and services - that make up the Switch console, or the brand-new recompiler mode.

Suyu's Future: Forked and Continued

Suyu is also pretty much dead, as the emulator's "official" open-source repository has now been archived in read-only mode. However, after being dead for a few days, Suyu is now being continued by a new team, with a new fork and a new versioning scheme (0.0.10).

Wine-NX: Running PC Games on Switch

Emulating a Switch console doesn't usually require particularly powerful PC hardware, but things can also go the other way around, with some unpredictable results. A different developer recently unveiled Wine-NX, a project designed to run older PC Windows games on a Switch console.

The programmer explained that Wine-NX is a port of Wine 11 to Horizon, the Switch's native operating system. The tool ships as a homebrew Switch executable package in NRO format, meaning only modded consoles will be able to run the code. Behind the scenes, Wine-NX runs the Box64 emulator inside Wine's compatibility layer, using the emulator's dynamic recompiler to try to achieve decent performance with 32-bit x86 Windows programs.

For now, Wine-NX can run:

  • OpenTTD at up to 60 frames per second through OpenGL APIs
  • Quake III Arena demo in HD at around 30 FPS
  • Need for Speed Underground 2 at between 20 and 45 FPS via CPU overclocking

The developer is already working to expand the project's scope by improving WarCraft III support and boosting performance in WineD3D's translated code.
