Roommate’s Wellness Companion: Local AI Sleep, Mood & Music Assistant Built with Gemma

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend What I Built I built Roommate's Wellness & Music Companion, a personalized local AI assistant designed specifically for my roommate. Between long study sessions and irregular schedules, my roommate: Dominic, often struggles with tracking sleep quality, staying active, and finding the right music to relax or focus. This tool combines a sleep tracker, a BMI & nutrition calculator, and an adaptive music shuffler that uses local AI to suggest tailored relaxation routines and music vibes based on how he feels in real time and not disturb me with loud music. Demo The app runs locally via a lightweight Streamlit dashboard connected to Gemma 2 running locally through Ollama. You can take a look here. Code You can check out the open-source code on GitHub: 🧘 Roommate's Wellness & Music Companion An open-source, local-first AI assistant built for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge 2026. Features - 😴 Sleep & Quality Tracking: Log sleep hours and quality ratings. - πŸ“Š BMI Calculation: Real-time local health metric calculations. - 🎡 Adaptive Music Shuffler: Context-aware music recommendations based on mood and fatigue. - 🧘 Exercise & Nutrition Routines: Instant stretches and meal advice generated locally. Setup & Installation - Install Ollama and Pull Gemma: ollama run gemma2:2b How I Built It The application relies on open-source, local AI technologies to ensure maximum responsiveness and privacy: - AI Model: Gemma 2 (2B) running completely offline via Ollama. - Frontend & App Logic: Built using Python and Streamlit. - Prompt Engineering: Formats sleep duration, sleep quality ratings, BMI metrics, and mood inputs into structured prompt context for Gemma to output tailored music, exercise, and quick nutrition tips. Why Does Open Innovation Matter? Open innovation and open-weight models like Gemma were essential for this project: - 100% Data Privacy: Personal health data (BMI, sleep habits, mood) stays entirely on the local device rather than being sent to external third-party cloud API servers. - Zero Cost & Infinite Usage: Running Gemma locally via Ollama means zero subscription fees, no API tokens, and no rate limits. - Offline Reliability: The tool functions completely offline on a laptop, making it reliable whenever my roommate needs a quick relaxation plan.
