Aaeon's new industrial PC combines Intel Arc B390 graphics with near-silent AirJet cooling

Aaeon has introduced a compact industrial PC that uses Frore Systems' AirJet cooling technology in place of a conventional fan and heatsink. The Up Xtreme PTL Edge Air is aimed at embedded systems that need strong processing performance without the noise, vibration or larger enclosure size associated with traditional active cooling. The design shows how newer cooling methods could give industrial PCs more room for faster processors and graphics hardware in space-constrained deployments.

Cooling and Design

The main change is the cooling design. AirJet uses ultrasonic membranes to create airflow without a traditional spinning fan. Aaeon says the system runs at less than 21 dBA, which makes it nearly silent in normal operation. The company also says the approach has allowed it to make the unit "35% thinner and 43% lighter" than a comparable system using a standard heatsink and fan.

A larger cooling assembly can limit where a system can be installed, especially in thin kiosks, mobile medical equipment and autonomous mobile robots. Aaeon said the PC is intended for "integration in space-constrained applications such as ultra-thin kiosk setups, low-clearance AMR housing, and compact mobile healthcare units." The lack of a conventional fan also reduces vibration, which can affect sensor readings, camera stability or the performance of equipment mounted in the same enclosure.

Performance and Graphics

The system can be configured with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, Core Ultra 7 356H or Core Ultra 5 325 processor. The top-spec configuration includes Intel Arc B390 integrated graphics with 12 Xe cores, giving the small machine more graphics capability than many embedded PCs used in kiosks, robotics and edge systems.

Connectivity and I/O

Aaeon has equipped the PTL Edge Air with the kind of connectivity expected in an industrial computer rather than a consumer mini PC. It includes:

  • USB Type-A and USB Type-C ports
  • LAN, audio and video outputs
  • Two serial ports supporting RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485
  • A 40-pin GPIO connector

Aaeon says the system can support as many as four displays at once, which could be useful in control rooms, digital signage systems or monitoring setups.

Memory and Storage

  • Memory support reaches 128 GB through two DDR5 SODIMM slots, with speeds of up to 7,200 MT/s
  • Two M.2 2280 slots for SSDs
  • An M.2 2230 slot for a wireless card

Software and Operating Systems

The Up Xtreme PTL Edge Air can run Windows IoT Enterprise or Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Trade-offs and Availability

The thinner design comes with trade-offs. Aaeon says the AirJet cooling setup increases power consumption by 6% and narrows the operating temperature to -10°C to 45°C. The temperature range may suit indoor deployments, but it is narrower than what some rugged industrial systems support.

Aaeon has not released pricing, which is common for embedded systems sold through direct sales channels and configured for specific projects.
