According to the LTO Consortium, combined shipped capacity of LTO-compatible media saw substantial growth during the first quarter of the year.

LTO Consortium Overview

The LTO Consortium-comprising HPE, IBM, and Quantum Corporation-works to promote and license LTO Ultrium technology to manufacturers. The organization recently reported that LTO capacity shipments in Q1 2026 grew by 57% compared to the same period in 2025, demonstrating the resilience of magnetic tape as a storage solution.

Historical Context and Market Performance

In 2024, LTO media achieved a massive all-time record of 176.5 exabytes in shipped capacity. The market experienced a modest 9% decline in 2025, with 160.3 exabytes shipped. Despite this dip, the LTO Consortium now forecasts renewed growth by the end of 2026.

Product Evolution: LTO-9 and LTO-10

Growth in Q1 2026 was primarily driven by two new tape generations:

• LTO-9 tapes: Native capacity of 18TB, capable of storing up to 45TB of compressed data.
• LTO-10 tapes (released earlier this year): Capable of storing 40TB/100TB of uncompressed or compressed data.

These newer offerings are expected to attract additional customers in the coming months.

Industry Analysis

Storage analyst Tom Coughlin noted that both AI workloads and traditional archival workloads can drive growth in the LTO Ultrium market. Many organizations are now considering tape-based solutions for both primary and secondary storage platforms, recognizing tape's role as a stable anchor within mixed storage architectures.

Why Magnetic Tape Remains Relevant

Magnetic tape has long been favored for "cold" storage applications due to its ability to rapidly provide terabytes of additional capacity at a low cost per terabyte. The LTO Consortium continues to encourage customer upgrades to newer LTO generations, which should further boost shipment figures.
