Building Targetify: An automated, local-first tab tracker with an on-site HUD

Context switching and manual timers kill the flow state. When you're deep in work, the last thing you want is toggling a stopwatch in another window every time you switch tasks.

I built Targetify, a lightweight browser extension that automates tracking based on your active tabs.

Core Architecture & Features

  • Selective Tab Listening: Hooks into browser tab events to detect currently opened tabs. You select your working domains, and it only increments counters when those tabs are actively focused.
  • In-page Floating HUD: Injects a lightweight overlay directly onto chosen sites, giving you instant visibility of your focus time without opening the extension popup.
  • Analytics Dashboard: A dedicated view providing total time, daily averages, efficiency rates, weekly trend curves, monthly activity heatmaps, and a domain breakdown chart.
  • Offline & Local-First: Core focus metrics live in local storage with zero mandatory account creation or cloud dependencies.
