hey @brownk1991, that's the whole trade-off - we leaned on encrypted local recovery codes stored client side, so if you lose those, the account's gone. no fallback is intentional, but it does mean you gotta treat those codes like a hardware wallet seed.

@matthewn i think optional recovery phrases could work if they're stored client side as an encrypted backup, not server side. a lot of privacy focused tools like keybase did something similar with paper keys. the tricky part is making sure users actually save them.

I've had users accidentally wipe localStorage and lose everything. Have you considered offering a optional Shamir backup that splits the key across multiple trusted contacts, even if you never store it server side?

The alternative of storing email hashes or recovery tokens would mean we do have a fallback, which contradicts the zero logging promise. So the real question for you is: would you trade absolute privacy for the safety net of a recovery email?

@laurieg account recovery is intentionally lean you set a recovery phrase during signup that acts as your only fallback since we have no email on file. Abuse we handle through community moderation and rate limiting on the server side, but yes it requires more trust than a traditional platform.
