SpaceXAI is now the owner of AI coding tool Cursor after a $60 billion acquisition

The AI programming tool Cursor is now officially part of SpaceXAI. The company recently acquired Cursor-maker Anysphere for $60 billion, making it one of the largest acquisitions ever. SpaceXAI says the deal is meant to improve the programming capabilities of its Grok AI bot.

Anysphere's employees won't continue as an independent company - they've been folded into SpaceXAI's AI team. There they'll keep working on Cursor, but also on SpaceXAI's Grok tools, such as Grok Build and Grok Bot. Cursor was already integrated into the Grok 4.5 model that launched last month, which SpaceXAI says was notably better at programming tasks.

Anysphere argues the acquisition lets it improve its programming agent:

"We get access to the world's largest collection of GPUs, giving us the compute to build more powerful models that are also more efficient. This means we can offer customers more powerful models at lower costs."

The deal has been in the works for a while - back in June it already leaked through a stock market filing that SpaceXAI planned to take over Anysphere, and the price tag of $60 billion was reported in April. With this, Cursor joins the list of tools under the Musk umbrella, and the integration between the popular coding IDE and Grok is now fully in-house.
