Beavers Are Wreaking Havoc on Dutch Dikes and Homes - And No One Can Agree Who Pays

Since their ceremonial reintroduction in the Biesbosch, beavers have become a costly problem species causing significant damage across large parts of the Netherlands. Water authorities, provinces, and residents report rapidly rising damage to dikes, roads, and homes due to burrowing and lodges.

The Association of Water Authorities saw annual costs rise from half a million euros in 2019 to 4.5 million in 2023, and the figure is expected to climb further. Special beaver patrols now inspect dikes daily. Coordinator Kees Schep warns that burrows beneath dikes, roads, and railways compromise structural stability and directly endanger safety.

The nuisance has reached residential areas. In Nijmegen, resident Sierra van Brunschot saw a beaver lodge under her home cause subsidence and warped walls, leaving her house declared unstable. Repair costs are estimated at 100,000 euros, and fifty neighbors face similar problems. Since beavers are a protected species, intervention requires a provincial permit, and a legal battle is underway over who bears the cost.

If that's the case, they should just shave them. Problem solved.
