Kenya's digital gig economy for students-once a major income source for hundreds of thousands of young people-has collapsed due to the rise of generative AI. Once a thriving 'academic essay factory' industry employed tens of thousands of Kenyan youth, especially during peak years around 2016. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and AceMyHomework had become popular outlets for students to pay for essays, assignments, and even full degree dissertations. At its height, estimates suggest over 40,000 students in Nairobi alone were working full-time on foreign student assignments. However, the arrival of free generative AI models has devastated this market. Western students switched to AI-generated content, driving down prices and eliminating jobs. Surviving assignments now rely on 'AI-mimicking' techniques to evade university detection systems. The collapse threatens the livelihoods of thousands of Kenyan graduates and reflects broader trends affecting low-wage labor markets globally, including in the Philippines and India. Experts warn this trend could signal a larger shift in how automated systems replace routine cognitive labor worldwide.
