White Traffic Lights Are Coming - Here is How They Work

A new traffic light has appeared on the streets of Rome - and it is white.

The white signal is not a replacement for red, amber, or green. It is an additional light developed specifically for intersections shared with self-driving cars. When the white light illuminates, autonomous vehicles take over control of the junction. They communicate digitally among themselves to determine who goes when, allowing traffic to flow far more smoothly than with traditional fixed light cycles.

For human drivers, the change is significant: you no longer follow the traffic light itself. Instead, you follow the car in front of you. If it brakes, you brake. If it moves, you follow. The idea is that a mix of smart vehicles and human-driven cars at busy intersections will reduce waiting times and congestion.

For now, this is still in the testing phase and the white light is not yet a European standard. But it signals where things are heading - intersections where not just humans, but cars and traffic lights themselves communicate with one another. This raises interesting questions for drivers, legislators, and driving schools alike. It may be time to get used to the idea that "follow the car ahead" could soon become an official traffic signal.

Nothing about that sounds like a good idea.
