Australian Couple Welcomes Extremely Rare Identical Quadruplets Sharing One Placenta

An Australian couple has welcomed quadruplets in what doctors describe as an exceptionally rare medical event. All four baby girls are genetically identical and shared a single placenta during pregnancy a phenomenon so uncommon that only a handful of similar cases are known worldwide.

The quadruplets were conceived naturally, which is itself unusual since multiple births more commonly occur after fertility treatments. The pregnancy was considered extraordinarily high-risk because sharing one placenta could cause an imbalance in blood and nutrient distribution between the babies. The mother was admitted to hospital from week 25 for continuous monitoring.

The girls were delivered by caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days. All four are in good health. The attending physician described the fact that all four girls arrived safely as "nothing less than a miracle."

The family, which already had four children, expanded from six to ten members overnight. The newborn girls have been named Emily, Harriet, Catherine and Alexa.
