Web scraping proxies? Overrated

Proxies. The duct tape of the modern web. Every scraping tutorial treats them like some arcane ritual, but the reality is brutally simple: you are fighting a losing arms race against people who get paid to keep you out. The real problem is not finding proxies. It is finding ones that work longer than five minutes. Free lists are honeypots. Paid residential pools are expensive and often just recycled datacenter IPs with a markup. I have burned more hours debugging proxy rotation logic than actually extracting data. Here is the dirty secret nobody tells you. The captcha walls and rate limits are not about preventing scraping. They are about making it expensive enough that you give up. Every 429 response is a price signal. If you are spending more on proxy infrastructure than the data is worth, you already lost. Stop treating proxies like a technical problem. Treat them like a cost optimization. Test your target first with zero proxies. Add them only when you prove the bottleneck is actually your IP. Most people layer on complexity before they even know what they are fighting.
