Driver Who Turned Off His Car Mid-Drive Crashes Into Oncoming Car, Gets 120 Hours Community Service

A 25-year-old man from Zutphen has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service after causing a bizarre traffic accident. While driving near Vorden, he turned the ignition key while the vehicle was in motion. This activated the steering lock, rendering the car uncontrollable. The vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another car, seriously injuring the other driver.

The man had only slept for one hour in the 26 hours leading up to the crash. The court ruled that driving with such severe sleep deprivation was extremely irresponsible. As a trained car mechanic, he should have understood the danger of turning the key while driving.

The court noted that although the consequences were serious, the outcome could have been far worse. In addition to the community service, the man received a six-month suspended driving ban.
