Most Children Labeled Gifted at Age Seven Lose Their Edge by Sixteen

Children identified as highly gifted at a young age often fail to hold on to their advantage. A large British study of more than 11,000 children shows cognitive development is far less predictable than commonly assumed, raising questions about how schools select children for gifted programs at a very young age.

Researchers followed 11,119 participants from age four to twenty-one, administering intelligence tests adapted to each developmental stage. At seven, children were placed in an average or above-average cognitive group, and the researchers mapped how their scores developed in the years that followed.

The results are striking: only 16 percent of children in the top-scoring group at age seven still held that status at sixteen. Most early standouts gradually slipped back to average. Meanwhile, only 8 percent of average-scoring seven-year-olds later climbed into the highest category.

Score stability only clearly increases from around age twelve; children who score high at that age keep their edge far more often. Genetics played the biggest role in maintaining a high score, followed by the parents' socioeconomic position. Surprisingly, a chaotic home situation, behavioral problems, or major life events had little influence. One environmental factor stood out: school engagement was linked to more favorable cognitive development, though still weaker than genetics.

The findings fit the Wilson effect, where genetic differences in intelligence become increasingly visible as children grow older. The researchers argue for regular reassessment of pupils instead of a one-time selection at a young age - a child who shines at seven need not still shine at sixteen, and late bloomers can still become the smartest in the class.
