Grandmother Accidentally Takes Wrong Child from Daycare in Belgium
A grandmother in the Belgian town of Strombeek-Bever mistakenly picked up a stranger's child from daycare instead of her own grandson. The error was discovered when staff realized the wrong child was missing, prompting an urgent alert through the neighborhood information network-a collaboration between residents and local police.
"The missing child was being pushed in a buggy toward the town center," read the dispatch. Fortunately, the grandfather soon returned the toddler to the daycare safe and unharmed.
"It ended well, but that doesn't change the fact that this should never happen," said Jelle Scheepers, a daycare spokesperson. Staff have since met with the parents of the mistakenly taken child, and are reviewing procedures to prevent future mix-ups. Proposed measures include asking for full names and ID from grandparents or anyone picking up children.
"We assumed a grandparent would recognize their own grandchild," admitted team leader Nele Macharis.
