Escaped Wallaby Outsmarts Zoo Keepers for Six Months Near Dutch Village

A wallaby that escaped from a zoo in Brabant six months ago is still on the loose - and it keeps evading capture. Around twenty attempts have been made so far. "The kangaroo is fast and keeps outsmarting us," a Zoo Veldhoven employee told local broadcaster Omroep Brabant.

Wallabies are quick, shy animals that become even harder to catch when chased. "We're basically waiting until it gets stuck at a fence or in someone's garden. Then we can simply pick it up. Chasing it through the woods is pointless," the employee said.

The animal was spotted this morning on a rural road. "I thought: am I really seeing this? First it was calmly eating grass. Then the kangaroo hopped off," said Ronny Balk.

Zoo staff aren't worried about the animal's wellbeing. "The kangaroo is doing just fine. It eats grass and other greenery and can live well on that."

It's quite exceptional for a wallaby to roam free for this long. Recently, a runaway wallaby was caught in Middenmeer in North Holland - but that one was recaptured the very same day it escaped.
