Why Your Weather Apps All Disagree by Up to 7 Degrees
You check three different weather apps in the morning and get three completely different answers. One promises sun, another rain, and temperatures can vary by as much as 7 degrees. How can there be so much disagreement about something happening right above our heads?
The Dutch meteorological institute KNMI explains that the word "forecast" itself is the first problem. "We never speak of predictions, but of expectations. We don't have a crystal ball," a spokesperson said. Every app is essentially giving an estimate, not a guarantee.
The real reason for the variation lies in the data sources. Each app draws from different weather models - powerful computer programs that combine measurements with atmospheric formulas. The KNMI app uses the Harmonie/UWC and ECMWF models. Other apps may use the American GFS model, while Apple Weather Service combines data from dozens of national institutes with its own machine learning algorithms.
Local details pose another challenge. Cities create their own microclimates through the Urban Heat Island Effect: asphalt, concrete, and brick absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night. Official weather stations are placed in open grassy fields per international guidelines, not between apartment blocks.
The KNMI advises users to focus on precipitation probability, check ensemble forecasts (a wider spread means greater uncertainty), and rely on official warnings for dangerous weather. For short-term local rain, a live radar map beats any hourly icon forecast.
