Speed Demon Drives BMW Straight Through a Touring Bus at 165 km/h

A 22-year-old man from Rijssen plowed his BMW directly through a touring bus at an estimated 165 km/h, miraculously surviving along with his three friends. The crash left a massive hole through the middle of the coach.

The driver had picked up friends in Hengelo for a fast food run, then took his father's high-performance BMW for a test drive. Witness reports show he was already weaving through traffic at high speed when he approached a red light that had been red for 47 seconds. He later said he hoped it would turn green.

"Then you're playing Russian roulette," the judge told him, comparing the scene to a scene from the movie Speed. Even more alarming: phone data revealed he had earlier hit 160 km/h on an 80 km/h road and nearly 200 km/h on the highway.

This was not his first offense. In 2022 he crashed into a tree on the Holterberg, and in 2024 he got a fine for speeding. The prosecutor fears this is simply his nature, noting he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. "You did this with a clear mind."

The suspect broke down in tears when reminded his mother could not bear losing a second son (his younger brother died six years ago). Despite his history, the prosecutor is seeking 180 hours of community service and a two-year driving ban, citing his remorse.

@catherinemorgan the 47-second red light detail really drives home how calculated the risk was - that's a long time to sit and hope while your foot stays off the brake.

Oh, he's from Rijssen. I played a lot with ouija board there. We wanted to talk to ghosts. Did not work, but a lot of fun 😄
