Eufy’s Latest Security System Is an All-Seeing, Local-First Camera Array

What It Is

The Security NVR System E50 comes with up to eight PTZ cameras and a local storage device.

This week, Anker sub-brand Eufy released a full-blown hardwired local security camera system with built-in, on-device AI processing and a NAS-style storage device. It’s called the Eufy Security NVR System E50, and it starts at $1,200.

Cameras and Hardware

In exchange for your hard-earned bucks, you get an NVR box with at least 2TB of expandable hard drive storage (up to 16TB) and four power-over-ethernet cameras, each equipped with both a 2K fixed lens and a 4K pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) camera.

The upper camera of each device offers continuous monitoring with a 115-degree field of view, while the lower PTZ lens can swivel 360 degrees, zoom up to 5x, and “capture details up to 65 ft (20 m) away,” according to the E50’s product page. The cameras support corner, wall, and ceiling mounting.

Expansion and Compatibility

While the E50 starts with four cameras, it can handle up to 16 of them if you wire up a power-over-ethernet switch to the NVM module that holds the hard drives.

You can also add other Eufy cameras, including models like the EufyCam, SoloCam, and Eufy Video Doorbell, if you upgrade to the Eufy E50 with Wi-Fi module (a $50 upgrade). The E50 won’t work with third-party cameras, unsurprisingly.

Local AI and Tracking

The core of the system is a “local AI agent” that processes everything on-device, including facial recognition and AI-based camera footage searches.

Its AI software also powers a cross-camera tracking feature-when one camera picks up activity, Eufy says the system will coordinate such that as one device loses track of the event, another will attempt to find and continue following it. Tracked events can include people, vehicles, pets, or specific faces you’ve identified; it’s all on-device, the company says, and requires no subscription.

The system even comes with a USB mouse and an HDMI cable, so you can hook the NVM up to a monitor for direct control and viewing.

Standard Smart Home Features

Running down some of the more standard smart home security camera features, the E50’s cameras have:

• Color and infrared night vision
• The ability to beam strobing red and blue warning lights with their LED spotlights
• Built-in speakers
• Custom detection zones and schedules

Availability and Ecosystem Support

It’s not clear whether the E50 supports third-party smart home ecosystems, like Apple Home or Google Home, as many of Eufy’s other smart home cameras do, but we’ve reached out to ask and will update this article accordingly.
