Men Nearly as Often Victims of Domestic Violence as Women, New Data Shows

Recent data from the 2024 CBS Prevalence Monitor reveals that domestic violence rates among men are nearly as high as among women. Physical domestic violence affects 3.4% of men compared to 3.8% of women, while coercive control affects 1.1% of men versus 1.6% of women. Despite these figures, this group remains significantly underserved by current policy and support services.

Experts Jeroen Traas and Vivienne de Vogel attribute the disparity to societal stereotypes. While male aggression tends to be more physical and intimidating, female aggression more often manifests as psychological abuse, including coercive control and isolation. The impact of this form of abuse is equally damaging and poses a direct risk to child development, contributing to school dropout and substance abuse.

Reporting rates among male victims are critically low, with only 3% filing a police report. Victims are held back by shame and fear of relational repercussions, such as losing contact with their children or facing false accusations from their partner. The researchers call for a gender-sensitive approach within outreach services to ensure male victims receive the support they need.
