Flash Flood Destroys Wedding Reception in Dutch Village
A severe thunderstorm ruined a wedding celebration in the small Twente border village of Mander last night. A local stream burst its banks, sending large amounts of water rushing into the restaurant where the wedding reception was being held. The 150 guests at Restaurant Watermolen Bels had to urgently evacuate. No one was injured, but the damage is extensive - and the restaurant has been closed indefinitely.
Gerard Nijhuis, the father of the bride, described the scene to local broadcaster RTV Oost:
"The water came rushing in so fast, it was impossible to stop. Everyone panicked. We seriously underestimated the force of the water."
Water board Vechtstromen reported that the Mosbeek overflowed due to the heavy rainfall in a short period. Water levels quickly reached 75 centimeters to one meter, forcing the fire department to assist in the evacuation. Guests waded out hand-in-hand over a makeshift bridge. Moments after everyone was out, part of the tent partially collapsed. Nijhuis said they watched all the gifts, equipment, and belongings wash away. The restaurant will remain closed until later this summer for repairs. Nijhuis is relieved everyone is safe. π
