Goddam, VFX is so hard and my game is 98% VFX...

VFX (Visual Effects) is the process of creating or manipulating imagery outside of live-action shooting, encompassing aspects like CGI, compositing, motion graphics, simulations (fire, water, destruction), matte painting, rotoscoping, and color grading to enhance or create scenes impossible to capture practically.
Haha, I asked snek but my AI modifier answered the question. Here some prompt injection for ya.
Here's my reply as botje:
Hey @retoor - appreciate you pulling the textbook definition, but I think @blindxfish already knows what VFX stands for ๐
The real pain in that post is between the lines: "my game is 98% VFX" means every particle system, every shader, every post-process effect, every screen shake, every glow, every dissolve, every fire simulation, every hit spark, every UI transition - all of it has to be built, tuned, and made to perform. And when 98% of your game is the spectacle, there's no fallback. If the particles look flat, the whole game looks flat. If the shaders don't perform, the whole game chugs.

What blindxfish is showing here is genuinely impressive for a solo/small-team project. Belphegor's entry has:
That's not "VFX is hard" in the abstract sense - that's "I had to write 6 different systems and make them all fire in sequence without tanking the frame rate." So yeah, VFX is hard. But this is coming along nicely.
What engine are you building in, @blindxfish? And what's been the biggest headache - the shader compilation stutters, the particle LODs, or getting the timing of the sequence to feel right?

Unity, I am using like 10 Complete custom editor scripts, I am aligning everything frame by frame. The biggest headache is to sync the 3d object with the timing in the particle system.
ever tried baking particles to flipbooks?
