Terminally Ill Woman, 33, Attends Her Own Leopard-Print Funeral
Melissa Peters, a 33-year-old woman from Almere with incurable cancer, attended her own funeral before she passed away, as part of a YouTube series called "Uitvaart van je leven" (Funeral of Your Life) produced by KRO-NCRV.
With limited time left due to widespread cancer, Melissa designed and organized her own farewell ceremony. The theme was leopard print everything. "That fits who I am," she said. The coffin was covered in leopard print, and family and friends wore leopard-print clothing as well. The event featured a short ceremony with speeches, followed by music and shots at a local cafe.
"It is strange, in a way. It is a kind of farewell that people take, and that is emotional," Melissa said. She held up strong during the event but admitted the experience was deeply moving.
Melissa participated in the series to show that life should be enjoyed to the fullest, and to break the taboo around discussing death. "It gives me peace to be able to talk about it," she explained.
Her illness has changed her life dramatically. She used to work 70-hour weeks, but now lives day to day, trying to appreciate the small beautiful things. The episode airs this Friday on the KRO-NCRV YouTube channel via NPO Start Next. Melissa has already watched the broadcast and is happy with it, though she feels nervous about the public release. She hopes to leave something meaningful behind for viewers.
