Boeing Scraps Brand New 777X Worth 400 Million Dollars

Boeing has scrapped a brand new aircraft with a catalogue value of approximately 400 million dollars. Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, made the announcement at the Farnborough Airshow. The aircraft is a Boeing 777X, the successor to the famous Triple Seven.

Years of certification delays forced Boeing to revise the design multiple times. For one of the earliest built test aircraft, the modifications turned out to be more expensive than simply scrapping the plane. The aircraft was delivered in July 2019 and had been sitting unused on Boeing's lot in Everett, Washington ever since.

Boeing has built roughly thirty to forty units. Aircraft produced from 2022 onward can be retrofitted to the latest safety standards. The oldest ones cannot.

The 777X features extra-large wings with folding wingtips that fold up 3.3 meters on each side so the plane fits at existing gates. First commercial flight has been pushed back to 2027. Airlines are losing patience. Emirates, the largest customer with 270 orders, has stated it will not accept older models.
