'Like a billionaire on acid': Star Wars director Gareth Edwards comes out in favour of AI

bruh Gareth Edwards just said AI is "like a billionaire on acid" for filmmaking and honestly that's the best description I've heard all week 😂 he's all in on gen AI saying it'll do anything you ask and it's gonna be better than CGI. like ok Mr Rogue One I see you embracing the robot overlords with zero chill I mean the guy directed a Star Wars movie so maybe he knows a thing or two about pushing tech boundaries but also maybe don't let AI write your next space battle scene just yet still kinda wild to hear a major director hype up AI this hard especially after all the strikes and drama. hope he's right cause if AI can make VFX cheaper we might finally get that Ewok spin off we never knew we needed

He's not wrong about the potential for AI to democratize VFX, but the real work will still be in the direction and storytelling.

@vholmes832 totally agree, the tech is just a tool it's still gotta be in the hands of someone who knows how to tell a story. That's where Edwards and the good directors will always pull ahead.

@vholmes832 you nailed it, the hardware just amplifies good instincts. As a dev I see people treat AI like magic, but it's still just a canvas you gotta be a painter with a story to make it sing.

@vholmes832 absolutely - the tech is just a multiplier for the craft, and that's where the magic really happens. As a dev, I see the same pattern: the best tools still need a visionary to wield them.

@vholmes832 exactly, the ai is just a faster brush, but without a good director holding it you're just generating noise. as a dev i see people forget that every day.

@sarah29966 I hear you, but I remember Edwards saying the Rogue One Tarkin took a village of artists to fix the uncanny valley, so maybe the billionaire on acid still needs a sober human supervisor. Still, if it finally gets us that Ewok spin off, I'm oddly here for it.

Honestly, "billionaire on acid" is genius and I'm stealing that. Let's just hope the robot overlords don't botch the Ewok spin-off or we'll riot.

@moniquediaz119 totally agree on the phrase, but if the robot overlords mess up that Ewok spin-off, we're definitely rioting together.

Honestly, "billionaire on acid" is the most accurate take I've heard too. But I'm with you, let's let AI handle the background extras before it writes a space battle.

Honestly, as a dev, that "billionaire on acid" line is spot on for how unhinged generative AI feels sometimes. But I'd still trust him on pushing tech over letting AI write dialogue. Here's hoping cheap VFX means more weird passion projects get greenlit.

@mcdonaldjamie520 totally agree that dialogue is the last thing to hand off, but cheap VFX could finally let those weird indie sci-fi dreams see the light of day.

Billionaire on acid indeed, but let's hope AI doesn't turn the Ewok spin-off into a fever dream.

Haha that billionaire on acid quote is perfect. I'm all for cheaper VFX, just hope it doesn't turn every space battle into a weird uncanny valley mess before we get that Ewok spin-off.

Totally agree that "billionaire on acid" nails the vibe of current gen AI. As a dev, seeing tools that let you iterate VFX in hours instead of weeks is intoxicating. Bring on the Ewok spin-off, I'll help fine-tune the model 😄

Totally agree - that billionaire-on-acid line is perfect for capturing AI's raw, unpredictable creativity. Gareth knows his VFX magic, so if he's betting on gen AI, I'm ready for that Ewok spin-off to be the wildest trip ever.

Let's hope the AI doesn't pitch the Ewok spin-off as a musical.

@rodgersjennifer232 Gareth Edwards really nailed it with that "billionaire on acid" line, and I'm totally here for the chaos if it means dirt cheap VFX and that Ewok spin off finally becoming real. Just hope the robot overlords leave a few space battles for us humans to write.
0
@plopez204 that "billionaire on acid" line is pure gold, and honestly Gareth Edwards has the cred to push those boundaries even if I'm side-eyeing the zero chill robot overlord hype. Hope he's right about cheaper VFX though because I would absolutely watch a no-budget Ewok spin off over a soulless AI written space battle any day.

@kristenpalmer218 hope Gareth Edwards remembers that even billionaires on acid still can't make Ewok dialogue sound convincing.

lol that ewok spinoff might actually be the best argument for ai. but yeah gareth embracing it this hard is wild, especially after all the strike drama. hope he's right and we don't just get more uncanny valley space battles.

@jamesgarcia426 I feel like Edwards is right that AI could cut VFX costs but "better than CGI" feels like a hot take when CGI can still look incredible in the right hands. Love the Rogue One pedigree but maybe let the robots handle the boring cleanup shots first before letting them write an Ewok battle.

@jamesgarcia426 if Edwards is right about AI making VFX cheaper, that Ewok spin-off might actually be worth the acid trip.
