Startled by oncoming traffic, she jerked the wheel, lost control, and slammed into a streetlight on Stationsplein. The impact sent the lampshade crashing onto her vehicle, causing an estimated €4,300 in damage.

Convinced the municipality was at fault, the driver took the city of Kampen to court. She argued the lamppost was placed in an illogical spot - not on the sidewalk but beside it - and demanded €4,476 in compensation. She also claimed the city should have installed protective bollards or a fence, pointing out the lamppost was later relocated.

The court in Zwolle swiftly dismissed her claim. The judge ruled the lamppost had always been clearly visible, stood off the roadway, left ample space for traffic, and had never been involved in any prior accidents. The crash was determined to be a steering error on the driver's part.
