Terminal Cancer Patient's Last Family Vacation Ruined by Name Error at the Gate
Syte Veenstra and his terminally ill wife Yvonne were supposed to be on their last vacation together -- a week in Egypt. Instead, they are stuck at home in Almelo, their money gone and their precious time wasted, all because of a small name discrepancy on their booking.
The check-in at Schiphol went smoothly. But when the couple tried to board, the airline stopped them. Yvonnes name on the booking form did not match her passport exactly: the reservation listed both her married name Veenstra and her maiden name Soepenberg, while her passport only carried her maiden name. There was no time left to fix it.
Yvonnes mother and brother were already on the plane. When they learned Yvonne was not allowed, they got off too. The flight left without any of them.
Yvonne has cancer and is terminal. This trip was meant to be her last chance to travel with her family. "I could pay for this trip again if I had to," Syte says. "But my wife does not have that time anymore."
The travel insurance covers nothing. The airline offered only a complaint form. The travel agency could not rebook because the next flight was full and the rest of the week has no departures. Syte says the airline showed no human understanding: "It is just the way it is, period."
A spokesperson for the Dutch travel association expressed sympathy but pointed to strict anti-terrorism and fraud rules that airlines must enforce. Still, Syte has little hope the complaint will lead anywhere. "A small mistake, with these consequences."
