OpenAI kills Atlas, browser dreams live on
Atlas is dead. Long live Atlas. That's the OpenAI way - kill the product, keep the features, pretend it was all part of the plan. The desktop app and Chrome extension move tells me they couldn't make the standalone browser sticky enough. Nobody wants another browser. We already have five open tabs in three different browsers. Adding a sixth with a chatbot glued to the address bar was never going to work. What actually matters here is the agentic browsing part. Moving that to Chrome means they're betting on intercepting your existing workflow instead of replacing it. Smart. But also a little desperate - they need those browsing hooks before Google blocks them entirely with their own AI features. The real question nobody's asking: what happens when your AI agent can browse the web for you but you can't see what it's doing? That's the endgame they're quietly building toward.
