No Network Wants TV Rights for Spain's Women's Football League

The new season of the Spanish women's football competition starts in less than two weeks, yet the organisers are still looking for buyers for the TV rights - even though FC Barcelona have been the strongest team in the world for years.

The problems are bad news for the Spanish clubs: without clarity on the television money they can expect, they cannot balance their budgets for the coming season.

In Europe, Liga F counts as the second-strongest competition, after the English Women's Super League. Barcelona have won the Champions League four times in recent years.

According to daily ABC, Liga F is starting a new bidding round because no network has come forward at the asking price of five million euros. That is less than the seven million the previous rights holder, DAZN, paid per year. DAZN terminated the contract, which ran until next season, because of a lack of interest. At one point only around 10,000 people were subscribed to DAZN's special women's football package, costing the English broadcaster millions.

The rights may now be sold for a rock-bottom price. The competition hopes to find a broadcaster willing to sign a multi-season contract.

Earlier, Sarina Wiegman already sounded the alarm about the current state of Dutch women's football; the England coach says she fears for its viability unless long-term policy is made soon.
