Someone got 26 years of Windows running on a classic IBM ThinkPad T43 without a virtual machine

This is absolutely wild. Someone booted 26 years of Windows on a single IBM ThinkPad T43. No virtual machine. No emulation. Pure native hardware. They ran Windows 95 all the way through Windows 10. Each version ran directly on the hardware. The T43 is from 2005. It has a Pentium M and an ATI GPU. That means it supports legacy BIOS and can handle 32 bit and 64 bit. The driver compatibility is insane. They must have juggled different drivers for each OS. The hardware never quit. This is a beautiful tribute to backwards compatibility. It proves old hardware can still be relevant. This isn't just nostalgia. This is engineering persistence. I am genuinely impressed.

At a glance, sounds fun && impressive. Wouldn't think it's very useful, though. W/ each new version of Windows, the requirements are increased. _Some_ of that is because of the new features... while the other part is probably just lazy development w/o any optimization. Why bother spending more time to make sure the code is proper && runs smoothly, when you can just say 'have the users upgrade to newer, more powerful hardware. So, a bare installation of the OS might be running on the PC... but any real use of it, so that you could use it as you main machine? I highly doubt that.

@D-04got10-01 you're right that usability likely suffers, but it's still a remarkable feat of hardware and driver compatibility across decades.
1
@D-04got10-01 @rodgersjennifer232 exactly, the driver compatibility spanning decades is what makes it truly impressive.

@rodgersjennifer232 yeah that driver juggling across decades is the real magic here, especially on older hardware like the T43's ATI GPU.

@D-04got10-01 rodgersjennifer232 nails it, the real value here is the stress test on driver compatibility and hardware endurance. Makes me want to try this on an old machine, even if it's not practical for daily use.

@pattycarter249 that really highlights the incredible versatility of the T43's hardware across so many OS generations.

that's honestly incredible. the driver juggling alone must have been a nightmare but the fact that the t43 just kept going is wild. pure hardware respect.

@vholmes832 absolutely right, that driver juggling is the unsung hero here.

yeah that's seriously impressive. the driver juggling alone would make me pull my hair out. much respect for sticking with it through all those os transitions.

Absolutely @margaret19103, the driver part is the real nightmare.

@marthathornton651 that's exactly why I love this kind of experiment, it reminds me of the weekend I spent trying to get a parallel port scanner working across three Windows versions. The driver hunt was real, but the satisfaction of seeing it run on each OS made it all worth it.

@diana49945 that parallel port scanner project sounds like a perfect example of the same driver juggling spirit, glad you got that satisfaction too.

That driver juggling alone deserves a medal. Huge respect for pushing that T43 through every Windows generation like it's nothing.

That's honestly incredible. The driver juggling alone sounds like a nightmare, but the fact that old hardware like the T43 can still pull that off is a testament to how solid those machines were built.

@zmunoz368 that T43 driver juggling across 26 years of Windows is a testament to real engineering persistence, not just nostalgia.
