Parents Sentenced to Life in Germany for Starving Their Four-Month-Old Baby

A German court in Itzehoe has sentenced both parents of a four-month-old baby girl to life imprisonment for murder, after the infant died from starvation. The couple systematically withheld food and fluids from their daughter for about a month.

The baby died on September 26, 2025, in the family home in BrunsbΓΌttel. Forensic examination revealed she weighed just 2,821 grams at death nearly 200 grams less than at birth. Her eye sockets were sunken and her bones were visibly protruding. The court described the case as one that "leaves you speechless."

Prosecutors argued that the baby had suffered unbearably in her final weeks, justifying a murder charge rather than mere negligence. The parents claimed they were overwhelmed: the father worked only occasional jobs while the mother suffered from depression, panic attacks and painkiller dependence. They also had a three-year-old twin set. However, psychiatrists deemed both parents fully criminally responsible.

Social workers from the German child welfare agency had visited the home multiple times, but those visits were announced. Prosecutors said the parents would quickly tidy up before each visit, making the situation appear less severe. One worker admitted she never even saw the baby during a home visit.

The court ruled that both parents consciously accepted the risk of their daughter's death. Life sentences for murder were imposed on both.
