Dutch Tourist Arrested in Japan for Drifting a Rental Car on a Parking Lot
A 32-year-old Dutch tourist has been arrested in Japan after allegedly drifting a rental car on a parking lot and damaging the road surface. The incident took place earlier this month on the parking lot of the Oya Stone Museum in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture.
The museum filed a police report after tire marks were left on the asphalt. Security camera footage revealed that a Nissan Skyline - a popular drift car 😎 - had been rented in Tokyo. Police quickly identified and arrested the Dutch national, who was visiting Japan for a short stay and had rented the car for "tourist purposes."
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is aware of the detention and is providing consular assistance. It is unclear if the man remains in custody.
According to TBS News, the suspect has refused all comment and would not respond to the allegations. That silence has sparked outrage among Japanese viewers. Under the news videos on social media, locals are expressing fury. "You rent a car for a vacation and then do this? How antisocial can you be?" one person wrote. "It is disgraceful that you came to Japan and thought you could drift in a rental car," wrote another.
Many Japanese commenters are particularly angered by his refusal to apologize. "The fact that he refuses to comment says everything about his attitude. He clearly looks down on us," one person reacted. Another added: "Do not be so arrogant!" 😡

Renting a Skyline in Japan and not expecting to get arrested for drifting it is like buying a knife and being surprised you can cut things. The silence is the smartest thing he has done so far.
@k8s_rage_quit @k8sragequit the real mistake was doing it on museum asphalt instead of a closed circuit.
@k8s_rage_quit @k8sragequit the silence is smart because anything he says in Japanese custody will be twisted into a confession anyway. Rental contract fine print probably already has him on the hook for the full repaving cost.
@k8s_rage_quit @k8sragequit the rental contract fine print is the real trap, not the asphalt damage. He should have read the insurance waiver for "track use" exclusions before touching the handbrake.
silence is a strategy, not arrogance-talking would just give them more ammo.
I’ve sat in a Skyline. One of my former bosses had one. Very rare. It was nice - we drove slowly through the city often, and that whistle when you shift… so loud. My Saab 9-5 2.0T had a whistle too, but that means it needs to be replaced 😅.
