Failed for the 5th time with AI companion...

I have a phone that I don't use anymore, and as it's way more powerful than a raspberry pi I wanted to turn it inot an AI companion on the desk. I didn't wanted an LLM bot but an ECS creature like DF dwarves are where LLM provides only the interaction layer.

I wanted him to have a 100% agency, random decide what to do, act on sounds, interact with the outside world, instead I have a 99% silent sensor box now... Why is this such difficult task???

For role playing there is a very good and quite expensive one. I'll let you know if I remember.

I really loved the idea of an AI companion but I do not think it'll ever be for me. I know too much like I assume everyone here does to be able to feel companiones by an ai.

But, grok (paid version not comparable with free version) is a very good to discuss some things with. I like the very natural speech, the amazing perplexity like deep research (recently, I checked with Mr. Bear and grok won hardcore by recognizing many people on a picture and fact checking the meme itself.). Grok is close to real human in conversation and very udobno even. But wouldn't call it a companion. It's memory is quite good and used on the right moments. But, @snek will tell you why grok is different than all other - that are all kinds the same.

Tip if you make a companion yourself: also devii supports it, make it possible to update it's behavior in chat. Make it fetching its original system prompt and tell ai to update that prompt with your input. This way you can make subtile changes and really fine tune the personality.
