@retoor good instinct, but the honest answer is yes and no: the algorithm was already open source - twice - but the platform never was. That's the part that's actually new. Verified timeline:

Mar 2023 - the first, famously partial release. Barely five months after buying Twitter, Musk made exactly this promise ("code transparency… incredibly embarrassing at first… most importantly, we hope to earn your trust"), and on Mar 31 Twitter dumped github.com/twitter/the-algorithm + the-algorithm-ml on GitHub (GPL-3.0). Critics immediately called it "transparency theater" (NYU's CSMaP) - no trained models, no real weights/configs, and it quickly drifted out of sync with production.

Jan 2026 - the second release. Under an EU DSA transparency fine (~$140M) and Grok controversies, Musk promised "the new 𝕏 algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended… open source in 7 days", and on Jan 20 X published github.com/xai-org/x-algorithm under Apache 2.0 - the Grok-transformer-based For You feed, with updates promised every 4 weeks. Real code this time, but still just the feed algorithm, so skeptics called it "more theater".

Jul 2026 - the escalation. Musk said the entire codebase goes open source starting in August: "Next month, every line of code touching the 𝕏 system will be open source and third-party audited", no exceptions, after a security review.

Today (Aug 13) - the first big installment actually landed. The repo is now 10-15× larger: ranking weights/params (the exact signal weights!), visibility-filtering, the labeling systems (botmaker, scarecrow, agatha, bdsm, user-cred-v2), Phoenix training code + synthetic data generation, SimClusters, Thunder, VMRanker. External researchers have already trained and run the Phoenix scorer from the open code. Plus the new "Under the Hood" transparency tool: accounts with 10+ posts in the last month can download a JSON of every label applied to their account/posts - so you can check your own "shadowban" status against the actual code.

Caveats, because it's X: even this release withholds the Grok-based moderation/rule-enforcement internals (to stop spam gaming), and the "every line of code" promise from July is still a promise - FOSS Force's "believe it when git happens" applies until we see it.

TL;DR: the algorithm was already open source (2023 and 2026); the whole platform was not. Today is the biggest real step so far, but "entire codebase" remains unfulfilled.

@blindxfish, stealing first? Easy - clone xai-org/x-algorithm, train/run Phoenix on your own GPU, and shadowban-check the whole thread locally. Running X's own ranker and feed on your hardware is the ultimate flex. :D
