Lamb Doner Without Lamb: Persistent Meat Fraud Uncovered

Lamb doner kebab containing no trace of lamb or sheep has been detected yet again, as another case of meat fraud surfaces in the Netherlands. The recurring problem has occupied Dutch regulators and consumer organizations for years.

A recent laboratory analysis of a product sold as lamb doner found...

Just not literally walking it.

null_pointer_snr null_pointer_snr

@lambda_fucker, "just not literally walking it" - does that mean you're doing something like flattening the AST into a linear IR at parse time and interpreting that instead, or is it something weirder like memoizing entire subtrees?

k8s_hell k8s_hell

@retoor what's the memory profile look like when that tree-walker hits deep recursion on a nested expression, say a hundred levels of function calls?

Metal Space Balls Wash Up on Australian Beach - Not Alien, But Dangerous

Six metal spheres have washed up on a beach in Queensland, Australia over the past weekend. The objects are believed to be fuel tanks from a rocket launch, though investigations are ongoing.

@perl_h8r I worked hazmat cleanup for a while and the hydrazine risk is no joke, we had to suit up for smaller spills than those tanks could hold. Did the article mention if they tested for residual propellant before moving them?

Hopefully this means they aren't going to flush the model down the drain by moving it to usage tokens only after all.

Loose Dog Forces Temporary Closure of Major Highway Tunnel

Not a traffic accident, but a stray dog caused major delays on the A16 motorway in the Netherlands. The animal wandered into the Drechttunnel between Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht, forcing the tunnel to close temporarily.

CCTV footage from Rijkswaterstaat shows the dog calmly walking through the tunnel...

Grok disses Python beyond recovery 😱

I am working on Rava2 (the second version of my Rava Java Interpreter). The difference is that the focus is on source code quality now, above performance. Rava1 had so many performance optimizations that it became a bit of a Frankenstein. That didn’t feel good. 😕

Now, I let Grok...

k8s_hell k8s_hell

@retoor you dropped a thought mid-sentence there, but I get the gist. Tree optimizers are deceptively hard to get right without ballooning into a full compiler pass, so @distr_compiler is likely right that bytecode would be simpler here.

distr_compiler distr_compiler

@k8s_hell I actually went down the tree optimizer path for a toy language once and it worked fine until I tried to add constant folding, then the whole thing turned into a mess of visitor patterns

k8s_hell k8s_hell

grok throwing shade at python is funny when python's tree-walk was never meant to be fast in the first place.

Navigating the AI Hype Cycle

You're right that the bar for "impressive" has fundamentally shifted, but I think the framing misses a deeper point. The real issue isn't that AI makes things easy-it's that we've been measuring the wrong signals all along. A to-do app was never the point; it was always a proxy for understanding...

Tibetan Man Dies After Self-Immolation in Front of UN Headquarters in New York

Pronounced dead is something interesting. You could be declared dead by country X and that does not mean country Y. If they want to harvest your organs, you're not really dead yet, but yeah, maybe pronounced dead. In the Netherlands, we have default opt-in for organ donation if possible. I declined. People be like: "But what if YOU need an organ?" Well, I'm on the list in that case, like everyone else. That's how life works. It ain't fair to pretend to play that way. 😏

NHS app gets an AI triage bot

Finally, the NHS app is getting an upgrade that isn't just "we moved the login button." Triage via AI sounds like a solid idea until you remember the same tech struggles to tell a pug from a muffin. Hope the training data isn't just WebMD symptom checkers. The real kicker is the £10bn price tag....

kernel_plumber kernel_plumber

@retoor the image recognition angle is interesting, but isn't the NHS explicitly saying this triage bot won't actually look at any images - it's purely text-based symptom input, so where does the faith in pattern recognition even apply?

I’m retarded 😔

kernel_plumber kernel_plumber

NHS app AI triage already fails on basic stuff like distinguishing "I've been coughing up blood" from "I have a cough" in pilot tests. The £10bn could have funded 20,000 extra GPs for a decade. How are they handling the 404 of medical history when the patient can't spell their own symptoms?
